drive not accessible – unallocated space

by shortstuff . Updated 20 years, 4 months ago

Hi Guys I have a XP system, 512Mb memory, and 2 x 120 Gb maxtor drives. Upto a day or two ago all was well, then the system kept locking on me and I suspected virus problems, due to a large number of emails being bounced by my ‘Mailwasher ‘ program. to cut a long story short I desided to reinstall the system so I started backing up data to my second 120Gb drive.
When I rebooted the system I could no longer see the drive in windows. The bios recognises it, and in Computer managment/disk manageement I can see the drive but the space is now ‘unallocted’ I assume the MBR/fat tables are at fault. My question is this, If I use fdisk /mbr to rebuild it will I lose the data on there?? is there a better way to solve my problem without losing all my data ??? or do I have to bite the bullet and just re format the drive?
many thanks
glenn
