Dual Monitors with IBM T42 and Docking Station

I am having a problem with dual monitors, and docking stations. My boss currently has his laptop (t42) plugged into his docking station. In the back of his docking station he has plugged in two monitors, one to his dvi slot, and one to his regular video slot. This works perfectly except for when he takes it out of the docking station. When he takes it out of the docking station he has no video on his laptop screen, even after he presses the function + F7 (switches output mode). The only way to fix this is to restart his laptop. we have tried to uncheck the “extend my desktop” checkbox, then take it out of the docking station but we havce the same outcome. Anyone experience this, or have any ideas, it would be much appreciated?
