DVD DRIVE WON’T PLAY DVD’s

I reccently brought a DVD Rom drive for my computer. It plays all media types accept for dvd movies. It is a 12X DVD and 40X CD Samsung SD-612.
I’ve searched samsung’s support area and tried updating the firmware but nothing seems to work. Could someone please help solve this puzzle.
