dvd format

What format is the most widly accepted format for dvd burners?
I wanted to purchase sony’s dur500a because of the multiformat specs but they have been back-ordered for so long I am wondering if it is worth waiting for.I need a burner for data back up and home movies to dvd.So I need a drive that will produce copy’s that will play on computers as well as home dvd players.
