dvd is not recognized

I have a Dell laptop. Most (movie)DVDs run just fine on it, but some do not. The system does not even recognize that a dvd is in the player.

This evening I opened a brand-new dvd and it would not play. I put in another dvd that I had never played before and it ran fine.

Any ideas?
