DVD Rom and CD-RW

I recently purchased a CD-RW for my Compaq Presario 5834, running Win 98. My existing DVD-ROM had a jumper setting of cable select. I tried numerous jumper settings in the new device (including cable select) and could not get my system to detect thenew device. Now neither device is recognized. What is the correct jumper setting for my setup. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem.
