I need some Help / Advice from some of you more internet/network server type Gurus. My Father and I have exchanged e-mails between us for quite some time. He is located up in, and on the moutains in the mid-NE, US. His available Internet is (unfortunately) Dail-up. ISPs are hard to come by, as none are interested in only a few customers, and a few more bears. Up until now it hasn’t been a problem for me, I just couldn’t send more than plain text e-mails. (We can live with that)
(I’ll just state here, for the time being, his ISP is “abc.com)
About a month ago I started recieving this notice from the “RIPE Network Coordination Centre” in Amsterdam:

I try to talk to my Father at least once a week, (by some sort of device that rings on his telephone, at his end) and I asked him if he had noiced any changes in his ISP service. More precisly was he getting any of my e-mails, and if not why not. He then contacted his ISP and was told that “They were blocking my ISP provider, due to excessive e-mails”. What exactly does is that supposed to mean? If my ISP was seriously SPAMing I think I would know about it before some poo-dunck, little ISP running out of somebody’s basement, in the back woods of NJ. I have tried Yahoo, again no luck. I even tried sending an e-mail from my (semi-)official .gov e-mail site. Again blocked. WTF. Just what kind of krapp service are those people trying to push off on their customers?
Now here’s my problem folks. What to do about all this. My Father is over 80 years old. He is a retired Electronic Engineer, but he is over 80, and not as fast a thinker as he once was. So, if they tell him it’s on my end, he’s tending to believe them. A simple search of / for this ISP, abc.com* gomes up with some strange things I haven’t seen in relation to an ISP before. There’s more, many more, too many more. Those last few, however, give a headache, I can’t look any further.
Now can someone please tell me that I am not the only person that sees something amiss with that “ISP”. Help.!. It is my understanding of computing that the “~” indicates a temp file. Is that correct here? Wouldn’t that (as well as other things I see) leave a rather big hole open to those servers?
How can someone deal with trying to work through an ISP with this open, visable (krapp -IMHO) info.? All I want is to able to e-mail my Father again. Any sugestions at all would be welcome. Thanks. -d
