Earthlink DSL without the Earthlink app

This is a question from a techie (CSC Consultant) who is relatively inexperienced when it comes to networking. But, here’s my question:

Can I use my Earthlin DSL without using their connection software. Their software locks up my PC every d@mn time.

I have gone out to DOS and run ipconfig to see the settings, and I get a DHCP server of 255.255.255.255 Is that a junk address?

Just wanting my high-speed without the troubles!
