Email POP3 retrieval

I am running Microsoft SBS 4.5 and currently not using MS Exchange. After setting up a client I am able to sent email messages out but for retrieval I am recieving a POP3 error unable to connect to host. Is there a particular setting in proxy that Iam missing that would enable me to retrieve my email?
