Enabeling VPN behind router

I have a BT modem BT2700HGV, by 2wire. Ihave been trying to set up a VPN but I can’t connect to it. I have selected to open the port in the standard rollout of ports entitled pptp server. I try to connect but never get past the verifying password stage.
