Epson DFX5000+ Out of Paper

We have the above printer (second one) that if you let the paper run out, and reload, it shuts down and will not restart for some period of time, usually 1-2 hours. Once restarted, it is a nightmare trying to get the paper reloaded. Everytime you load it, it loads, lines up the paper and shuts down. You need to start the whole process over again, including the wait. Any ideas appreciated.
