After reading through an interesting post named “What should I do: Uninvolved boss”, a topic popped up in my mind.It would be interesting to get some feedback / suggestions / comments.
Have you ever worked in a team where your boss/manager prefers a co-worker over you or other members of the team?. The preferred person (X) is not necessarily more savvy than the rest but merely a sales person + some bluff. However the person in question is responsible and works well as the rest of the team.
This action is observed during formal/informal conversation between both parties, sense of a person likes the other, more importance is given to his/her opinion(s) rather than others(in some instances intelligent technical advices are ignored over a less-viable solution). I believe that person X is competent in specific topics in IT however lacks broad knowledge and in-depth knowledge and foundations.
When person X is absent then equality rules.
Also, I do suspect that the boss/manager sometimes feels that his/her job is slightly threatened as another person Y is well-experienced and knowledgeable in a variety of areas.
In such a situation I think that it is hard for Y to make a career out it.If one works hard and gives 100% or beyond, the manager still won’t appreciate the well done job (or little as his/her responsibilities towards project completion were covered). If one is pro-active, the manager won’t appreciate the act.It could be felt as a threat.
It might be the case that person Y would ‘fight’ through it and keep on working hard ,get demoralized, or else keeping a low-profile (keep silent)with the boss whilst coping with the daily chores.
How could one climb the career ladder?
How should one react to such a situation?
