I just purchased a Linksys 4-port router w/ switch and can’t get the configuration utility to come up. This is the third one I’ve purchased (for different clients) and I know the problem is not with the router because it worked on another computer. However, what’s strange is that lights are on on both the router and the NIC, indicating a good connection. However, when I bring up the browser and attempt to access the web based configuation utility, it can’t find the router and I get a DNS error page. Opening a DOS window and typing “winipcfg” (since the OS is Win98SE), I see that the IP assigned to the machine is not one for an “internal LAN”. Furthermore, the subnet assigned is 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0. Even if I change the tcp/ip settings from “obtain an ip” to “specify an ip” and input the correct subnet and an IP address of 192.168.1.2, the router cannot be found and the utility will not come up. Any thoughts?
