Exchange 2003 Front End

I want to bring up a front end server in my DMZ. The DMZ also happens to have another Forest.
My question is, can the front end server be a stand alone server-not a member of any domain- and have Exchange 2003 installed and still be part of the existing Org in the production domain?

We really do not want to punch that many holes in the firewall.
