Exchange 2003 – moving into DMZ

We have moved our exchange server 2003 into the dmz, some users are complaining of more spam in their inboxes. I haven’t personally received additional spam and I don’t understand why they are saying the increase occurred after we moved the exchange server because that doesn’t makes sense. We did not move anything else, all other services remain the same. Has someone else experienced this?
