Exchange 5.5 trouble with email address

Hello

I am using exchange 5.5 on an NT Server. I have a user who’s mailbox was deleted because he resigned. Now this person has been re-hired and I am having trouble setting up the email address again. Our format is firstname.lastname@xyz.com – Ican create the mailbox but when I try to modify the email address settings to firstname.lastname I get an error message saying this email address already exist in the organization. No one else had this address except for him. Also I sent an email tohis old address through Outlook with it set up to “tell me when mail has been delivered” and I get a response stating the messages was delivered to “Deleted Users Mailbox”.

Is there anyway to create a mailbox and resurrect the old email address of firstname.lastname@xyz.com.
