Exchange roles

Hi, i have an existing exchange 2000 server and have recently purchased another exchange 2003 server for our domain. Although i have succesfully transfered all mailboxes over to the new server it seems that i have problems when i stop exchange services on the old one. Is their “roles” that i need to transfer over to the new server? and if so how do i go about it.
