Expiration of HP Inkjet Cartridges

After receiving the following error on my HP 2175 Printer/Scanner/Copier:

“Remove and check cartridge.”

I replaced it with a brand new cartridge and received the same error.

Searched for this error using google and found the following site:

which claims that HP printers reads expiration dates on the cartridges and will not accept them even if they are full and/or brand new out of the package. Is this true? If so, it means you cannot stock up on any cartridge.
