explanation of specs for harddrives

I need to purchase new/alternative harddrives for the machines in my training suite so that lengthy set-ups of PC’s for courses needing completely operating systems can be a thing of the past. I need to know what I am asking for and would appreciatean explanation of specs of hard drives and how/if they change with each manufacturer.
