Explorer.exe refuses to start at startup

by tom.davey . Updated 19 years ago

OK heres the deal…..earlier today I started up my PC with a cd in the
drive: il2 stumrovik [its a game]. I am only mentioning this to provide
as much info as possible bu ti do not think it has anything
whatsoever to do with my problems because i have installed it before
and played it.

anyway: i get to the login screen (‘windows is starting up’ stays for
slightly longer than normal–i shall ignore this though) and login to
my account. The desktop background appears. So does the taskbar
and icons. then it dissapears. and then reappears for a few seconds
again and maybe again. It looks like that every time it reappears it is
starting up affresh: the taskbar icons load up each time it appears
and the ‘itunes dockling’ appears each appearance. then it just
dissappears alltogether and i am left with the desktop background
and a cursor. nice.

so i start up task manager. new task>run>explorer.exe.
appearances start and go and start just like when i logged in.

weird, eh? i am hoping for some kind of solution==perhaps deleting
the explorer file and replacing with a new one from some location on
the internet which you could provide me with? i am writing this on
my mates macintosh so thats no use (as if they ever really are :p).

its quite a desperate situation i am in, and as i am sure you will know
i want to avoid clean install as much as possible. lots of files on this
machine.

i use vncserver, and can access the said problem computers screen
remotely, so some services are running fine…its just explorer ruining
my life right now. not quite ruining, but its a pain in the ass to wake
up to!

any help is GLADLY accepted, i am choosing you guys for my lifeline;
im new here!

thank you so much in advance, from Tom.

ps any info you want me to post about my computer ill be around for
the next week.

pps. please dont ask me to go to start>anything–that would really
annoy me because i cant! pretend that you can only solve this with
start>run and task manager, thanks.

btw i started up with safe mode and explorer still doesnt exist.
