Extended Desktop on PC using Vista OS

I have connected two monitors using a splitter for an extended desktop. But it’s not working that way. What do I need to use for the extended desktop in Vista. I don’t have an additional dv port on my desktop. Do I need to buy something, if so what is that?…thanks in advance.
