Extended xms Memory (DOS Prompt Memory)

by jwebb . Updated 23 years ago

Using Windows 98SE on an Athlon 900Mhz system with 384MB RAM. Have tried over and over again to adjust memory. When we go to a command prompt and use the mem /c /p command, it shows that almost all of the Extended xms memory as being used. Total: 65,967,536 Used 64,918,960 Free 1,048,576. We have tried disabling any startup applications using msconfig, we have tried booting is safe mode, etc. but nothing seems to make any difference. The only time the used amount of xms memory seems normal is when the system is restarted in MS-DOS mode. On most occasions, the command prompt works, but on some occasions, we receive the error “There is not enough available memory to run this program. Shut down one or more applications and then try again”. We do not receive any memory errors with any other applications but one. We use a Help program for creating HTML style help. This program shells out to the Microsoft Help Compiler to actually compile the help file and the same error is presented to us when this happens. The system has been fully scanned for viruses using just about every virus scanner available and nothing is found. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can solve this memory issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
