External Cache with networked computers

We have found it necessary to disable external cache on all computer workstations
that access, and update shared data bases, to
insure reliable operation.
I have never seen this mentioned in the literature, and am wondering if we have missed somthing important somewhere all the way. We use a variety of peer to peer networks.
