external hdd

I’m sure someone had the same problem at some point but i can’t find a satisfying solution online, so i try my luck here: i have a 2TB Seagate HDD that’s connected via usb-c to my M1 mini and it never winds down. i have set the energy settings to tell external drives to do this, but it’s not happening. is there a hidden setting or some extension i could install to order this drive to go into standby? it’s not even shutting down when i send the mini to sleep, which is pretty annoying.
