External monitor intermittently goes black, connected to dckng sta/laptop

I have an external monitor that periodically goes to a black screen. The external monitor is connected to a docking station. An HP laptop is on the docking station. I can go back to my desktop by touching the mouse however the screensaver option is disabled. Any suggestions would be helpful.
