Extracting bandwidth from network

I connect internet using a lan gateway. The problem is that when the gateway start using net or start downloading almost 70% of bandwidth is consumed by it and we have little bandwidth. Now how could I extract maximum bandwidth from the network. I am using Download accelarators like flashget andbit commet but problem persists.
