FAILED SONY VAIO: can I rescue the HD?

After repeated problems with a Sony Vaio notebook, it died (literally burnt itself out because of a thermal management problem)

The motherboard is dead, but the hard drive is supposedly fine (if you believe SONY)

Can I somehow rescue the hard drive? Convert it to an external HD? Use it with another computer? I am open to any and all solutions.
