Fat 32 false memory error

I am getting false memory error messages which state that… can cause windows to report the drives free space incorrectly or slowly. I then run scandisk which fixes the problem but only gives a temporary fix. What is wrong and how can it be fixed??
I am using 98se with 768mb ram and have lots of free space on my drive which has been defraged. It seems most of my problems occured when I installed Quick time pro 6.1
Any help would be appreciated, the color of Blue screen could send me to an early grave.
