fax machine/fax modem on same phone line

I have a fax machine connected to a fax modem. When I send a fax from the computer it goes successfully but if I try sending another fax it fails. If I unplug the fax machine it is able to send fax.
i would like to keep the fax machine plug in themodem so it recieves faxes when the computer is on or of.
