fiber optics

I need to connect two buildings that are about 500′ apart. I was told that the best, most reliable way to connect them would be via fiberoptics. I don’t know much about fiberoptics, what kind of fiber optic cables and connectors do I need? Also,how do I integrate it into my existing 10/100 ethernet network? I think I need to get a switch, but what kind do I need? Any advice is appreciated.
