File allocation table repair

I have an older PC (233MMX) with a hard drive that scandisk informs me is bad. It has a corrupt FAT. Scandisk will not fix this despite trying every possible combination. I would like to try to salvage this disk. It can be read from and written to, but is VERY slow. What should I do short of replacing the drive.
