File is corrupted

I have a friend who has problem on accessing his files.. specifically Excel and Word files.. these files are lost when he wasnt able to install Adobe Photoshop correctly. And then his files .doc and .xls files are lost. Any clue on how to recover those files?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
