Firewalls: Behind, In front or beside…

Can someone please explain to me, in terms of configuration, what those terms mean? Is it the way the firewall is physically connected to the network or is it the addressing scheme or something else. I know what it means in terms of what is protected, I am asking about setup/configuration. URLs and diagrams if necessary are appreciated.
