floppy drive

I have a two laptops that are running windows 2000. Whenever the users of these laptops try to copy a file larger than 40kb over to the floppy the computer gets the dreaded BSOD. We have downloaded all of the current drivers for the system including windows 2000 updates. We were told the only way to solve this issue was to reinstall the OS (dreaded last resort). If anybody can offer any help would appreciate it.
