Floppy Drive

I have two computers running Windows 2000. Both are Dell laptops. The problem that I am having is both of the laptops are receiving the BSOD whenever a file larger than 40kb is copied to the folder. We were told the only cure is reinstalling the OS, but that would be our last resort. Any information would help, thank you.
