Floppy drive problem

by donalda-m . Updated 22 years, 11 months ago

I’m either overlooking something obvious or have a strange problem. Either way I would appreciate some help. I have a computer I’m trying to get up for a small non-profit. The only problem is that the floppy isn’t working. I have switched out the cable and floppy with ones that I know work and I still get a floppy fail (40) error. If I reverse the cable the light stays on, but it does not light at all if positioned the normal way. I have tried disabling the controller and drive in the BIOS and Device Manager and adding a multifunction card (with all but the floppy disabled) but still no luck. I did notice that for some reason “5 1/4 floppy (A:) is showing in My Computer, but the drive is a 3 1/2. As far as I know the floppy worked at one time. Running Win 98. Thanks

I have mucho points so I’m being generous in hopes a better tech will be generous with time and expertise.
