Folder Permission

Hi,
We setup a log program inside the wwwroot/folder of a website. The company wants to protect the access to the logs so we tried to setup access tot he folder but having troubles now cannot access at all. It pulls up a window asking for user password but it is looking for www.thedomainname.com to connect to instead of the name of server in the user account? not working?
