Format Master Boot Record on Harddrive

I tried to get rid of a spy program on the MBR.

Is there any utility available to identify data on the MBR or to have a confirmation that all files formated on it?

Is there a difference between the DOS command fdisk /mbr and the unix dd command to delete data.
