Formatting Hard Drive

I ma formatting my hard drive and I get this message:
Formatting Hard Drive 1,218.62M
Trying to recover allocation unit (with a number counting up, ex 190,300 and counting up)

What is this and it there something wrong? How long will this take?Am I doing something wrong? I want to load WIN95 onto the hard drive. Any help would be great.
