Forticlient and SQL Server

Is anyone using Forticlient to connect to a remote sql server. I am in this situation. I can make the VPN connection. I can ping the server. I can connect through remote desktop and get to look at the sql tables and the data.
however if I try to connect to the sql server using the enterprise manager on my latop I cannot connect. I have asked for help from forticlient support several times but they have been not been of any help.
