I have a server that is badly fragmented, about 5777 fragmented files and 59000 excess fragments. I have tried diskeeper and it cannot defrag the drive sucessfully. The data is not corrupt, it’s just very slow. I have plenty of room for diskeeperto work, about 1.5g on a 8g array. The MFT is also very fragmented, page file is not. I once heard that I can do a full backup on the data, format the drive (OS is on a different drive) and restore the data back, this would give me a clean slate. When I ask around, other techs tell me i will be wasting my time, others tell me to replace the drives. Logically if the data goes on the tape in a contiguous format, will it not go back on the formatted drive in contiguous format. I am getting mixed reviews, is this a viable method to defrag a hard drive?? Thanks for any help you can offer.
