Good direction for re tooling your skill set and staying relevant…

by mluchtman . Updated 17 years, 4 months ago

I am 33 and have been in the industry for about ten years. I am still currently employed.

My main area of experience has been Visual Basic 6, SQL Server, VBA, Excel, ASP (the ones before .NET) some scripting (Java Script and VB Script) HTML and a little XML, IIS, and COM +.

I remained with this technology because all of the jobs I have had since I started (only three jobs) have used these skill sets only.

I am afraid that if I become one of the unlucky ones to get laid off I will not be employable because as most of you I am sure can see I am using really old technology, and really need to re tool.

What I do not know is Should I go down the C#/ASP.net/WCF/WPF/WWF approach or the Java/JSP Approach?

Also what about methodologies, should I learn something like RUP or PMP and what about technologies like UML?

Lastly is being a programer still going to be a relevant career choice over the next 5 + years or should I branch out and do BA stuff and try to intigrate into PM after that?

Any help or suggestions or if any of you can point me to a good resource to look this info up would be greatly appreciated.
