grey cd rom cable, not needed?

i was just wondering if anyone can explain to me the signifigance of the grey cd rom cable that runs inside a pc to the sound card. i have setup pc’s that played sounds fine without that from say, a cdrw drive. if all the sounds can just go through the ide bus, why the cable?
