Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’m not much for the mushy holiday, but I got gifts from my two sons that are so unique that I am positive not another living soul on the planet received the same thing…

Here’s the background. My younger son, who is 9, is enrolled in an art class in the evenings. He wasn’t crazy about the art class, but my husband and I wanted to get him involved in a few things that didn’t involve a monitor of any kind.

His first project, was to draw, then paint a bird of prey. He chose a golden eagle. He brought his picture home and showed it to his brother (he’s 20) who promptly said, that’s not a golden eagle, it’s a desert penquin. Then we had an evening filled with arguements over whether or not it was a eagle or a desert penguin. This is what MOST evenings are like. The older brother picks on the younger brother and the more the younger one protests, the more the older one teases. They both love it. It’s their hobby and the source of many headaches for me.

Last night, the younger boy had homework that involved modeling clay. He got his homework done, and I went upstairs to read a book. After 30 minutes or so, I realized that there wasn’t any loud and annoying noises coming from downstairs. I went downstairs to see if they had actually killed each other and the two of them were huddled together doing something with the remainder of the clay.

When they saw me, they said that they had a Valentine’s present for me. So, I got not one, but TWO hand crafted desert penguins. One is on a surfboard and the other has great big googly eyes.

So, there… How many other people could have possibly received home-made desert penguins for Valentine’s day?

Of course, after I GOT the penguins, the older boy started looking at the younger one’s most recent artwork which is a painting of a dinosaur eating a chunk of meat. The older boy asked him why he painted a picture of an eel eating a tadpole. And so it goes..
