Hard disk going crazy

I have a SATA 160 HD. many times it starts spinning at very high speeds. it happens whether i am connected to net or not
why this happening,
once i restart the pc it stops
what is wrong.
i use Avast antivirus, Lavasoft Antispyware
both updated automatically.
