hard drive undetectable

by gmax95 . Updated 24 years, 9 months ago

I’m trying to install a hard drive w/ no luck so far. First of all, my pc is a P266 w/ Award BIOS 97-98. The hd is a Western Digital WDC-WD200EB 20GB IDE 100/ATA 5400rpm.

When I boot up, only the primary slave is detected, but not found. It then shows the CDrom. That’s it. I’ve tried booting w/ a Win95 boot floppy and it does boot to the floppy, but only displays the cdrom. I’ve tried all the basic troubleshooting: ide cables, power supply, making sure the hd goes to ide1 and cd to ide2. Adjusting the jumper pins on both the hd and cdrom don’t seem to make a difference. I’ve also opened up a similar pc and emulated all the hardware setting and connections to the motherboard, but to no avail.

I know bios after ’98 will support hd 8.4GB and larger. This bios has a date of 3/18/98, but still has copyright of ’97. Also, I’ve tried installing a known good 2GB hd and the same thing happens.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
