I have a 20GB Maxtor HD that has quit on me. The computer locked one day, and upon rebooting, the BIOS could not detect the HD. I have tried the drive in two other computers with the same results. I have replaced the drive with a new unit and reinstalled the OS (WINXP Home). The crashed drive still spins up, but the BIOS will not recognize it. I am guessing that the controller built onto the HD is defective. Assuming that this is true, is there any reasonably cost effective way to recoverthe data from this drive? It is not critical data, but some is irreplaceable (can’t teach some users to backup, no matter how hard you try!).
Thanks for the help.
