Specific to an older IBM Thinkpad running XP. I had a temp version of Norton installed. Uninstalled Norton, cleared all references on thesystem, and cleaned registry out. I next tried to load AVG Free onto system. It won’t load because another antivirus system was detected by AVG install. I did a deep search – found no other vendors.
I believe the problem is that on this machine the Thinkpad has a ‘Virus protection’ switch ON. I go into Control Panel, select Security Center, and see the 3 switches are ON (Firewall, Automatic Updates, and Virus Protection). I can manipulate the Firewall switch and Update Switch; but I can find no way to (even temporarily) turn the Virus Switch to OFF. I tried in Safe Mode as Admin
and could not access it.
Does anyone know how to either A) toggle this Virus Protection Switch (so that AVG does not think there is an anti-virus program running; or B) install AVG Anti-virus onto a system after encountering a situation such as this?
