Help me edit vi to configure files for m

how do I edit vi files (etc) to install my modem? Need help please. I don’t understand what i’m doing.

After it is installed how do I send a email message?

Obviously you can see I’m new at Linux. If at all possible could you display the necessary string I need to complete the editing process?
