Help with RAM

I have been looking to buy some more ram for my computer. I have seen all different kind of PC speeds (PC1600 ddr, pc2100, 2400, 2700). Can someone please help explain to me the different speeds, and basically what this translates into (speed wise). Thanks in advance…
